The Lean Construction Institute (LCI) recently honored Victor Sanvido, Senior Vice President at Southland Industries, with the Pioneer Award at its 21stAnnual LCI Congress in Fort Worth, Texas.
A dedicated advocate of LCI and the Lean community for over 20 years, Sanvido has been extraordinarily influential in encouraging some of the country’s most progressive owners to effectively implement Lean processes. With a PhD in civil engineering and extensive studies in project delivery, he has proven himself uniquely qualified to assist and consult with owners on the best methods of approaching design and construction projects.
“Victor Sanvido’s contributions to LCI and the Lean community over an extended period are unparalleled,” said Dan Heinemeier, Executive Director of LCI. “He has made LCI a much stronger and more influential organization than we otherwise would have been, and he has impacted our industry for the better by helping project teams coast-to-coast to see and eliminate waste and enhance value for the owners they serve. We could not have chosen a more worthy recipient of this year’s Pioneer Award.”
About Lean Construction Institute:Founded in 1997, LCI is a nonprofit, membership-based organization with a vision to transform the built environment through Lean implementation. With common language, fundamental principles and basic practices, LCI aims to increase stakeholder satisfaction and project delivery value. The design and construction industry’s productivity level has remained nearly stagnant in 50 years as other industries thrive, but LCI sets out to improve the industry by facilitating continuous education through their Transforming Design and Construction book series, Lean instructional training courses and the annual LCI Congress and Design Forum. LCI advocates for using a variety of tools and techniques that help promote collaborative planning, waste elimination and work-site safety. The trend toward alternative project delivery is continuing to accelerate, and most contractors– but not all – are beginning to worry that the market may be on the decline. Ted Lynch, CEO of Southland Industries, says that many overstretched contractors end up looking for mergers and acquisitions as an exit strategy when they get into trouble from too much work. Large specialty contractors like Southland Industries know that the market has the potential to grow in FY2020, and among the Top 600 Specialty Contractors, Southland is proud to be ranked #17 and currently occupies the #4 spot on the Top 50 Mechanical list.

KEYT//SANTA MARIA, CALIF. –To meet the demand of an active and healthy lifestyle, the Californian city of Santa Maria reached out to the local community and heard the need for their public parks to have more field space and increased field time with adequate lighting for soccer and other sports. Southland Energy and PG&E are partners on the lighting of the new project, working with the Santa Maria City Council on a plan to keep the fields open later after 5 p.m. “We’re talking about a multi-million dollar project citywide,” said Recreation and Parks Director Alex Posada. “This will allow us to become more energy efficient and use the savings from that energy efficiency at our facilities to pay back the cost of the project.
